Our nursing team

Our nursing team comprises two nurse specialists, dedicated specifically to adults and paediatrics, and one research nurse who covers the whole unit. Our nurses have extensive experience in limb reconstruction and are highly skilled members of our team.

Claire Longhorn

Claire Longhorn is a Nurse Specialist. She qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1997 from Keele University. She has worked at the Bristol Royal Infirmary since then, initially as a Staff Nurse in Trauma and Orthopaedics, before progressing to a Senior Staff Nurse in Surgery. She has worked as a Nurse Specialist for the Limb Reconstruction Unit since 2002 and is working towards her Masters degree.

Claire is responsible for the specialist nursing care of the limb reconstruction patients, supporting them through their entire treatment pathway. She is also involved in teaching /education of hospital staff both on site and at the University West of England and has spoken nationally on Ilizarov and TSF courses.

Sharon Carrie

Sharon is our paediatric orthopaedic nurse specialist who works closely with Mr Monsell and Rebekah Lambert (specialist physio).

Sharon's role involves pre-operative consultation and planning around paediatric limb reconstruction surgery. This includes liaising with schools, Occupational Therapy and local services, to ensure everything in place for surgery. Sharon teaches frame adjustments and management of pin-sites, and assists general frame care during hospital stay. Sharon is available to phone regarding any problems after discharge, for example, advice, troubleshooting, or to arrange urgent review.

Sharon has been in this role for 5 years, following an extensive career in orthopaedic nursing. Since qualifying in 1986, Sharon has worked almost continuously in orthopaedics and paediatric surgery. She gained her Independent Nurse Prescriber qualification from Gloucester University in 2009.

Jane Harris

Jane Harris is our Research Nurse. Originally from Lancashire, Jane trained in Bristol and completed the Orthopaedic Course at the University of the West of England in 1993. She has worked on a variety of wards with specialities including oncology, general surgery, trauma & orthopaedics and the A&E Department at the BRI.

Jane was the Ward Sister of the Breast Surgery Ward and helped facilitate its transition and expansion into a Surgical Assessment Unit. She joined the Limb Reconstruction Team in Bristol in 2003 and is responsible for co-ordinating all research trials within the unit. She assists the medical staff with audit and data management and helps to generate publications.
